It’s always nice to be pleasantly surprised by a support band that you’ve never heard of before, and that was very much the case last night at The Crimea’s show at King’s College Union (a review of which is coming later).
The Hot Puppies brought to mind at times a slightly less manic Sons And Daughters, or a much better Little Flames, with Becky Newman’s powerful voice and some dramatic keyboard adding to spiky, energetic songs which were impressively inventive for a new band in the crowded retro-indie scene. There was even a Theremin used a couple of times which always helps.
Two demos from their site don’t quite convey the fun of the live show but are recommended regardless:
The Hot Puppies -The Party
The Hot Puppies -The Drowsing Nymph
